Childrens Eyecare
How well can your child see?
Could your child have a lazy eye?
Your child may not be seeing clearly. Children with vision problems
rarely complain because they don’t know what clear vision should
look like. Because vision is such an important learning tool, it is
a good idea for all children to have their vision checked.
Children can have their eyes assessed at any age. The examination is
child friendly using appropriate picture or letter cards and some
tests don’t require any input from the child at all. Often the
optometrist will use eyedrops to accurately assess if any correction
is needed. Our aim is to gain the information we need with as much
comfort to your child as possible.
Your child may not know if they have poor eyesight, so here are a
few signs to look for:
- Holding books very close
- Sitting too near to television
- Excessive blinking, eye rubbing or red eyes
- Tilts head to use one eye only
- Misses out words when reading
Correction of children’s eyesight may include wearing spectacles,
eye exercises or treatment of lazy eyes.
Pre screening for Irlen’s syndrome and pre and post Cellfield exams
are available.
If you’ve got a Community Services or High Use health card you can
get your child’s eye care subsidised as well as any prescription
spectacles which may be needed.
