Contact Lens Fitting
Why contact lenses?
Below are some of the reasons why people choose to wear
contacts:
- Don’t want to wear glasses
- For sport
- To gain a wider field of view than spectacles provide
- To obtain better vision for some prescriptions, for example
severe shortsightedness
- To change eye colour
Today, most people can wear contacts. Your optometrist will
recommend which type is best for you, dependent on your
prescription and lifestyle.
Soft disposable lenses are available for daily, two-weekly or
monthly wear and suit most people. Continuous wear lenses are
worn up to a month without being removed. Rigid gas permeables
are often used for high degrees of astigmatism or for
keratoconus. Multifocal contacts are available for those who
would normally wear bifocal or progressive spectacle lenses.
After an intitial contact lens consultation with your
optometrist, there will be follow-up appointments. The first of
these is to teach you how to insert and remove your lenses along
with how to care for them. Subsequent appointments allow your
optometrist to check your progress, to discuss lens comfort and
wearing times, and to ensure the continuing good health of your
eyes.
